During the peak of summer, temperatures are aggravated due to the combined heat from individual roofs in an area. A flat cool roofing system can mitigate this problem because it’s created with highly reflective and emissive materials to help lower heat by 50 to 60 F. If roof maintenance is in the foreseeable future, you might want to consider upgrading to a flat cooling roof.
Flat Cool Roofing Materials
Consulting your roofing contractor, aside from discussing your regular roof maintenance, should include creating the best course of action. Flat roofs, also known as low-sloped roofs, utilize coatings and single-ply membranes to reduce surface temperatures.
1. Cool Roof Coatings
Such roofs are sprayed with a coating to treat the surface. The coating, which has a texture similar to thick paint, is composed of additives that function to increase adhesion, durability, block growth of algae and fungi, remain void of dirt. It can be applied to many surfaces and single-ply mediums. Cool roof coatings come in two types: cementitious and elastomeric. They are both capable of solar reflectance higher than 65% and a rate of thermal emittance from 80 to 90%. According to roof maintenance experts, like RTN Roofing Systems, the main difference between these two types is that the elastomeric is waterproof.
2. Cool Single-Ply Materials
Single-ply cool roofs are pre-fabricated single layer sheets that are glued or fastened to flat roofs. The sheet is shut on the seams through taping, gluing, or welding—depending on the type of single-ply material. The most common types of single-ply membranes are: Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer (EPDM), Chlorosulfonated Polyethylene (CSPE), and Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) and Thermoplastic Olefins (TPO).
Prior to your roof maintenance, discuss your flat cool roof options with your roofing contractor. A general rule would be to choose cool roof coating if your roof only needs a minor repair. But if your roof needs a major repair, you might prefer using single-ply cool roofs.
